Choosing an exterior plastic-trim dressing

Compare exterior trim dressings, PERL mixing quantities and prepared-volume costs, with sourced methods, labelled price examples, CSV data and Amazon options.

Plain trim-dressing bottles and a foam applicator beside clean black exterior plastic

Buy a dressing for the material you actually have

An exterior trim dressing is an optional finish for compatible clean plastic. It can change the appearance of faded-looking trim, but it is not a permanent repair for cracked, peeling or degraded material. Start by checking that the part is unpainted exterior plastic rather than a painted bumper, a gloss-black pillar, rubber moulding or applied film.

Clean the part first using the black-plastic trim guide, then assess it dry. Wet plastic often looks darker, and a previous dressing can complicate the comparison. If white marks sit beside recently polished paint, use the wax-residue method before choosing a darker finish. Covering a mark is not the same as removing it.

The useful buying distinctions are ready-to-use versus concentrate, application control, the intended finish and the complete removal or buffing method. Manufacturer descriptions do not provide a measured ranking of durability, gloss or restoration on your particular car, so this guide compares roles rather than assigning performance scores.

Autoglym Bumper & Trim Gel: a ready-to-use choice

The current selected UK bottle is 500ml. It suits a routine where you want to clean and dry the approved trim, use a small amount on a suitable applicator and buff the excess without preparing a dilution. Autoglym’s instructions make that final buff important for avoiding excess product running in wet weather.

The gel contains silicone. Check the vehicle’s instructions and any restrictions relevant to nearby work, specialist finishes or seals. Do not assume that a product approved for exterior rubber and plastic can be applied to every roof moulding or moving seal. Keep it as a finish for the identified permitted part.

Autoglym Bumper & Trim Gel 500ml

A silicone-containing gel for compatible unpainted exterior plastic and rubber. Apply to clean dry trim with a suitable foam applicator, spread evenly and buff away excess.

  • 500ml ready-to-use gel
  • Clean and dry first
  • Buff off excess
Keep in mind

A dressing changes appearance; it is not a permanent repair for degraded plastic. Keep away from glass, controls and tyre tread. Do not infer approval for every roof or door seal.

CARPRO PERL: a concentrate for accurate mixing

PERL makes sense when you are comfortable preparing and identifying a diluted product. The maker’s exterior-plastic ratio is one part PERL to three parts water. That means four total parts of mixture: one measured amount of product plus three equal measured amounts of water. It is distinct from the ratios given for tyres, rubber and interior uses.

Choose it for the method rather than assuming concentration guarantees lower cost. Actual coverage and waste depend on the part, applicator and directions. A separate suitable bottle and a clear label are part of the setup; a food container or an unmarked spare spray bottle is not an appropriate shortcut.

For a dilutable dressing with a specific exterior-plastic ratio

CARPRO PERL 500ml

A concentrated water-based dressing. CARPRO’s exterior-plastic directions specify one part product to three parts water, followed by controlled application and removal of excess.

  • 500ml concentrate
  • Exterior plastic: 1 product + 3 water
  • Mixing bottle separate
Keep in mind

The exterior-plastic ratio is not the tyre or interior ratio. Follow received directions and material approval, mix accurately and use a labelled bottle. Not a permanent restoration or universal rubber-seal treatment.

SONAX XTREME Plastic Restorer Gel Exterior: apply a thin layer

The selected 250ml gel is article 02101090. SONAX specifies washing and drying before soft-sponge application, with a thin layer and brief working period. It warns that too much product can attract dust. This makes careful spreading more relevant than trying to produce the wettest-looking surface.

Despite the “restorer” name, treat it as a care product with defined surface limits, not proof that damaged plastic has been permanently restored. It is for compatible unpainted exterior plastic and is excluded from interiors and driving controls. Do not copy a different product’s buffing timer or leave it on hot trim.

For a thin-layer treatment of unpainted exterior plastic

SONAX XTREME Plastic Restorer Gel Exterior 250ml

A 250ml gel for unpainted exterior plastic, applied sparingly with a soft sponge after washing and drying. SONAX warns that an overly thick layer may attract dust.

  • 250ml bottle
  • Item 02101090
  • Thin soft-sponge application
Keep in mind

Use only on compatible cool exterior plastic. Not for interiors, pedals, steering wheels or quads. Follow the received brief working interval; do not interpret the restorer name as a permanent repair.

Choose a separate applicator for control

A small clean foam applicator helps keep dressing on the identified trim instead of spraying near glass and paint. Autoglym’s pointed applicator is one option where the dressing’s directions permit it, particularly for narrower edges. It is a separate accessory, so it should not be counted as a fourth dressing or assumed to come with every bottle.

Controlled hand application

Autoglym Perfect Polish Applicator — Twin Pack

Two shaped foam applicators for compatible polishes and dressings. Autoglym lists Super Resin Polish among their intended uses; the pointed edges help you work around trim.

  • Two applicators
  • Shaped foam
  • Wash and air dry
Keep in mind

Reserve a separate applicator for tyre dressing. After use, wash in clean warm water and air dry. Check the bottle’s method; these are not machine-polishing pads.

Turn PERL’s exterior-plastic ratio into a measured batch

CARPRO’s exterior-plastic method uses one part PERL to three parts water. That makes four total parts, so the concentrate is 25% of the finished mixture. The selected bottle is the 500ml variant; match that size and the received label before using these figures.

Calculated
Complete batches
Calculated
250ml62.5ml187.5ml8
500ml125ml375ml4
1,000ml250ml750ml2

Method: concentrate = final batch ÷ 4; water = final batch × 3 ÷ 4. A 500ml batch therefore needs 125ml PERL and 375ml water, not 500ml water plus product. In an ideal loss-free calculation, the selected concentrate makes 2 litres of mixture: eight 250ml batches, four 500ml batches or two 1-litre batches.

These are alternative batch sizes, not a suggestion to prepare all two litres at once. Make only a useful amount in a suitable labelled container, follow storage directions and allow for measuring or transfer losses. The recipe does not establish treated area, applications per bottle or mixed-product shelf life. Do not transfer the exterior-plastic ratio to tyres, rubber seals, leather or interior controls.

Download the three mixing recipes, bottle inputs and source link (CSV). The source ratio is fixed here; batch size is the planning choice.

Compare prepared volume and the complete mixing cost

The ready-to-use 500ml Autoglym gel and 250ml SONAX exterior gel retain their bottle volumes. Do not dilute them to imitate PERL. The table compares nominal prepared volume after each product’s stated method, with an explicitly hypothetical £12 delivered Autoglym bottle as the reference.

Hypothetical equal cost per prepared litre, before extra equipment
Selected bottlePrepared volume
Calculated
Delivered bottle price
At equal volume cost
Autoglym Bumper & Trim Gel

0.5 litres£12.00
CARPRO PERL
500ml
2 litres£48.00
SONAX XTREME Exterior Gel
250ml
0.25 litres£6.00

The reference is £24 per prepared litre. At equal volume cost, PERL could cost £48 delivered and the SONAX bottle £6. These figures are arithmetic thresholds, not retailer offers or target prices. Different gels and a diluted dressing can require different application quantities and leave different finishes; equal volume cost is not equal cost per treated panel or month of protection.

Threshold formula: reference delivered price × candidate prepared ml ÷ reference prepared ml. If a suitable bottle and measuring setup cost an assumed £4, and that entire cost is assigned to the first 500ml PERL bottle, its equal-volume item-price threshold falls from £48 to £44. The £4 is hypothetical, not an accessory recommendation. Reused equipment has a different allocation; include only what is genuinely missing.

Common applicator or cloth costs cancel only when both routes need the same new items. Water cost, transfer losses and existing supplies are excluded from these simple examples. Keep any such costs consistent when substituting your own figures. Product and applicator suitability must be settled before price comparisons, as in the complete-basket guide.

Download the prepared-volume model and thresholds, including the £4 setup example (CSV). Source volumes and methods, assumed prices and calculated outputs are separate columns.

Decide what finish you want before covering the car

Descriptions such as satin, rich black or gloss do not guarantee the same appearance on every plastic texture. Old dressing, uneven weathering and the amount left on the surface can all affect what you see. On an approved inconspicuous area, complete the exact method and inspect the dry result before committing to a broad panel.

If you prefer a restrained appearance, control the dose and remove excess where the instructions require it. Do not attempt to change the finish by inventing an unapproved dilution for a ready-to-use gel. A concentrate gives a specified mixing route; a gel with no dilution directions should be used as directed.

Treat paired or adjacent panels consistently so the intended result is easy to assess. Avoid comparing one treated wet section with an untreated dry section and declaring the whole difference permanent restoration. Photographs can exaggerate that contrast, especially when the lighting changes between views.

Preparation and cleanup are part of the purchase

A dressing works on the surface left by the cleaning stage. Dirt, wax residue and old product in textured plastic may lead to an uneven appearance. Use compatible cleaning first, rinse or remove cleaner fully, and let the part dry as directed. Do not buy a dressing to avoid solving uncertain residue.

Think about where the excess will go. Keep product off glass, tyre tread, brakes, pedals and other controls. Use a separate suitable cloth for buffing where specified and keep that cloth away from windscreen finishing. A cloth that has carried dressing should not be returned to the glass pile simply because it has a clean-looking corner.

Check storage and aftercare directions before buying a large bottle. Protect the product as instructed and keep it in an identified container. A smaller ready-to-use bottle can be the more manageable choice for occasional work; a concentrate can suit someone already set up for accurate mixing. Neither format is automatically the better value without real consumption evidence.

Do not extend trim advice to every black surface

Painted and gloss-black parts need their own finish care. Rubber seals may have vehicle-specific restrictions, and panoramic-roof mouldings can exclude products acceptable on a bumper. Our roof guide and seal-cleaning guide explain those separate decisions.

If the part is brittle, cracked, peeling or loose, seek repair advice before trying to improve its colour. If it is clean and intact, leaving it undressed is also a reasonable routine. Buy a compatible finish you can apply and maintain correctly, rather than treating “black plastic” as permission for one product everywhere.

Common questions

Is trim dressing a permanent plastic restoration?

No permanent repair is established by these recommendations. A dressing can change the appearance of compatible clean plastic, but it does not repair cracking, peeling or degraded material.

What is the exterior-plastic dilution for CARPRO PERL?

For compatible exterior plastic, CARPRO’s cited method uses one product part plus three water parts. A 500ml final batch is 125ml PERL plus 375ml water. Other tasks have different ratios; do not dilute a ready-to-use gel to imitate this recipe. The received label and material approval control use.

Should I buy gel or spray dressing?

Compare the approved surface and complete application method first. A controlled applicator can help near glass and paint. Ready-to-use gels avoid mixing, while a concentrate needs accurate dilution and a labelled suitable bottle.

Can bumper trim dressing be used on door and roof seals?

Only where the vehicle permits that exact treatment on the particular seal. Roof mouldings can have different restrictions, including exclusions of wax. Do not infer universal seal approval from general exterior-rubber wording.

Why does dressed trim attract dust or run in rain?

Check whether too much product was left on the surface or the prescribed removal stage was missed. SONAX warns against a thick layer; Autoglym specifies buffing excess. Follow the exact product method rather than adding more.
